How Do I Stay?
The Mid-Missouri Fisher House provides a free "home away from home" for families of Veterans receiving care at the Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital and families of active duty personnel who have loved ones in other facilities. Guests are able to be near their loved ones while having a comfortable, peaceful place to find rest and support for themselves. More than a convenient and beautiful place to stay, the guests of Fisher House share common experiences, form friendships and become a unique kind of family, a Fisher House family.
This is the front entrance of the Mid-Missouri Fisher House located on the campus of the Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia Missouri.
How do I arrange to stay at the Mid-Missouri Fisher House?
Referrals to the Mid-Missouri Fisher House are done by VA social workers or clinical staff. An initial screening will be conducted to determine appropriateness. Rooms are assigned on a first come first served basis one suite per veteran family with no more than four adults per suite. Priority will be given to those families whose veteran is hospitalized in the Truman VA Hospital for longer periods of time.
To qualify, guests must have a referral and veterans and guests need to be traveling a distance greater than 50 miles from their homes to the Columbia Missouri area. Guests must be a family member or caregiver of the veteran receiving treatment at the VA Hospital. Guests must be medically stable and capable of self-care and be prepared to provide support for the hospitalized veteran. The guest must also be able to stay in an unsupervised setting and must not have any contagious conditions that can be transmitted to other guest's and staff including bed bugs, fleas, roaches, etc. Guest must agree to sign and follow our Fisher House guest agreement. Veterans that stay at the Fisher House must be with a family member/caregiver, veterans are not authorized to stay at the Fisher House by themselves. Is there any charge for staying at the Mid-Missouri Fisher House?
There is no charge for staying at the Mid-Missouri Fisher House.
Does the veteran need to be a VA patient for his family to stay at the Mid-Missouri Fisher House?
The veterans must be receiving services from the VA or authorized by the Va to receive care in the community such as the University Hospital, Boone Hospital, or other area healthcare facilities.
What are your hours?
The house is open year-round, 24/7 for family members of Veterans and military members getting medical treatment. Staff is present Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., except for Federal Holidays. Check-in is normally after 2:00p and check-out is normally prior to 11:00 a.m. If a family needs to check in to the house when staff is not present, with advance notice, staff can make arrangements for VA Security to meet incoming guests at the house.
Are Meals Provided?
Meals are not generally provided unless one of our many volunteer organizations comes, prepares and serves a meal. Our very nice full kitchen is available for self-preparation and a limited amount of canned and boxed foods and snacks is available for your free use. The Truman VA Hospital has a Patriot Cafe restaurant (573-814-6325) available from 7:00a until 2:00p, Monday through Friday. Please Note: Food and drinks are not allowed in the individual guest bedrooms, but bottled water is allowed.
Are Pets Allowed?
Pets are not allowed to stay at the Mid-Missouri Fisher House including "emotional support animals". Only Service Dogs accompanied by their primary handler will be allowed to stay with current vaccination records. If you are bringing a Service Dog, please advise the Mid-Missouri Fisher House prior to arranging your stay.
General Restrictions?
Guns, firearms, or any type of weapon or explosives, alcoholic beverages or Federally illegal substances (i.e. drugs, marijuana or the likes thereof) are not permitted in the Fisher House. Smoking and tobacco use is prohibited in or around the Fisher House. Other prohibited items inside the house and guest rooms include hair dye, permanent markers, nail polish and nail polish remover, and anything with open flames such as candles, hot plates or coffee makers.
